Forbidden Cinema 51 - Showgirls - Going Deeper

We end our year with a bang going deeper on Showgirls.  Join us as we do extra credit and watch You Don't Nomi and try to figure out if this movie was better than our first impressions.  
Zack spends a lot of time looking at the history and physical demands of being a showgirl.  Zack spends too much time looking into bananas strip club laws around the country.  Zack spends way too much time looking up current pubic barbering trends and the risks associated with them.
We talk about the sad ending of both the showgirl show, and the Cheetah dancing lounge.  We also do the math and figure out how many human fingers Nomi could have been carrying in that gross suitcase.

Forbidden Cinema 50 - Showgirls

For our 50th episode join the hosts as we tackle our most requested, and probably the most forbidden of the 90s.  Guys, this thing is wild.  If you had asked me what this was before I saw it, I would have said the guys who made Basic Instinct got back together with a lot of drugs and hired the girl from Saved By The Bell to spend 1/3 of the movie nude in a spectacle of flesh and grit/glam of Vegas.  I think that is exactly what we got, but we aren't quite sure if that is what we needed.
Join us as we go through it.  We hit on the highs and lows and everything in between.  How many podcasts have the guts to talk about Good Morning Miss Bliss and David Lynch's Dune in the same breath.  We try to get to the bottom of the performances, was it insane writing, directing, acting, or all of the above.  Or is there something we are missing?  Is there a magic here that is just hard to see on first viewing.
There's rhinestones everywhere.  There are boobs even more places.  There are switchblades, monkeys, and Garth Brooks.  Did we mention Robert Davi is in it?  We have David Bowie on the soundtrack and we wonder about how stripper poles are sanitized.

Forbidden Cinema 49 - Weekend at Bernie’s - Going Deeper

Join us as we break down all the unanswered questions from our discussion on Weekend at Bernie's.  We take time to try to understand the reviews, box office, and reason for a sequel for this move.  We discuss but don't really get to a finishing point on why this movie is so poorly reviewed, only a modest financial success, but has entered into the lexicon to where everybody knows the premise.
We take some time going deeper on the careers of Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman.  Zack accidentally stumbles on MrSkin's Anatomy Awards.  We find out that the footsie trope goes way back, like really way back (and also unnecessary sequel cash grabs are far older than we thought).
We blow the lid of the Hamptons ferry controversy and spend a bit of time talking about the career of Zack's first thong girl Eloise DeJoria.  We look at the movies out at the time and have a huge nostalgia trip with an interview with Pat Morita.

Forbidden Cinema 48 - Weekend at Bernie’s

Welcome back to Forbidden Cinema, Spring Break Edition.  This week we tackle Weekend at Bernie's from 1989.  This is a movie that Zack saw in his friend's rec room at 10 or 11 years old, had on VHS, and spent many hours hoping his parent's never took the time to watch it to see what was in it.  This is one of those PG-13 movies from the 80s with content not catering to children, but jokes that nobody with a fully formed brain would not find funny.  But underneath that is one of the best dead-weight slapstick performances of the last 50 years.
We talk about how creepy old white guys still keep ending up infesting our sexy coed beach adventures.  We discuss how this is the first time that Zack ever saw a thong, and try to figure out when Jenny first became aware of them.  We welcome back an unsung hero, Don Calfa, of the Forbidden Bonus Room.  We also wonder why every wacky scene from the trailer is in the last 15 minutes of the movie.

Minx has landed on HBO Max and it is awesome.
Join your hosts as we branch off in an entirely new direction.  We have spent the last year podcasting about movies our parent's wouldn't let us watch and Zack has been elbows deep in explicit print journalism from the 70s, 80s, and beyond.  In the midst of all of this, HBO Max releases a new show about a new erotic magazine from women in the 70s... and it has Nick Miller in it.
We are there.  We watched the first episode and are hooked.  We are so hooked we are launching an entire spin off podcast to watch along with the series as it airs.

Forbidden Cinema 47 - The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas - Going Deeper

Here we go.  Guys, the Chicken Ranch was real.  This whole thing is based on a true story.  Zack buys the books, reads the newspapers from the time, and finds local news coverage from the time.  The true story is almost crazier than the musical.  All the wondering we did about why Dom Delouise didn't get his comeuppance is finally answered.  He is based on a real person who became a local legend after this story.
This has been one of our favorite surprises in our journey and we hope you come along with us.  Come along with us and watch Zack get angry at a Captain D's advertisement from a 1982 newspaper entertainment section.  We go back to 1974 in Playboy to get the original story that would become the musical.  We also for the first time dive into Playgirl magazine to try to find some answers.  Speaking of magazines for the ladies with some eye candy, watch our feed for a topical bonus episode in the next few days.

Forbidden Cinema 46 - The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

"Have you ever just been reading Playboy magazine from the mid-80's and saw a picture from a movie and thought let's go watch that and had this much fun?"
We watched The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.  This thing is an R Rated musical.  We knew Burt Reynolds would show up eventually, but I don't think that this is how we assumed.  Also, have we mentioned that St Dolly Parton is in this thing.  We shouldn't have to say more, but we go on for a bit.  We talk about Zack getting busted cussin, and Jenny going into Fredericks of Hollywood.  We talk about how everyone from Texas A&M is a degenerate while wondering if aliens have peckers.  
Come on down and sit a spell.  We have a romp with a rough and tumble sheriff.  There is the madame with a heart of gold.  Dom Delouise and Gomer freaking Pyle are in this.  Ladies, if you aren't lucky enough to be married to someone who loves musical theater, this one probably has enough boobies to keep your guy interested.  Finally, this is the movie debut of "I Will Always Love You."  Watch this movie and then go on a journey with us.

Forbidden Cinema 45 - Porky’s - Going Deeper

This week we look back at the unanswered questions from our discussion of the 1981/82 film Porky's.  Zack goes a little funny trying to figure out where the fictional town of Angel Falls really is and where Porky's would have to be located in order for the geography all to work out.  This is a tough one, because most of the questions we asked had really simple answers that didn't lead down deep dark holes of the internet.  Spoiler Alert, the fact of the podcast for the last couple of weeks is that there was a Porky's video game for the Atari 2600.  Listen on to hear Jenny react to Zack playing the thing.

Forbidden Cinema 44 - Porky’s

Wow...  This one...  Things are different 40 years later.  In this episode we look back at a film that Zack turned off on basic cable because he was afraid it was too dirty.  This is a film that was a huge commercial success that basically made A Christmas Story able to happen.  It is racist, homophobic, and has a view on women that would have been outdated even in it's setting.  But it also made Zack almost fall off the couch laughing.  This is the birth of the teen sex comedy and is influential in a way that much better movies could only hope to be.
